Spirits of the West Side…

Ok…

i wanted to share some of the very personal and candid pictures i have been lucky enough to be graciously invited to capture that, to me and my eye, capably demonstrate the odd, strange and very, very rich supernatural vibe that is so prevalent in the historically eccentric yet still entirely urban West Side District of Providence RI.

i have selected twenty shots from the hundreds of images I have procured over the last six months of exploration into the nooks, alleys, mills and neighborhoods that make the West Side a truly brilliant place for supernatural visitation.

to me, some of these incredible, yet humble beings are what we call ‘spirits’, some seem to be of the ancient race of the ‘fey’ and others mercurially defy definition.

one in particular, the happy little friend i have come to know as ‘dingdong’, seems to be some kind of ‘familiar’, who has consistently shadowed me through many of these beautiful little excursions into the spaces in between.

i cannot express to you how much the company and message of these beings has meant to me over the last many months. they consistently demonstrate to me the true meaning of “hiding in plain sight”, and the profound lesson i learn from them each time i take a walk with them is one of harmony and meaningful co-existence.

never once have i felt, or have i been made to feel, even the slightest bit uneasy or frightened when i am respectfully within their transitory presence.

they seem like purely wild and endlessly welcoming spirits and i can only hope they somehow see us the same way…

first, let me start by introducing you to ‘dingdong’, my happy little friend…he loves peanuts and he seems to live to swallow gum…

he seems as though he is a cross between a lizard and a monkey and a parrot, and he wears a little set of black clothes and boots that i find absolutely weird and adorable.

he is, to me, a great companion and he is fiercely loyal and protective…even if he does consistently gnaw the shit out of my ipod headphones and inevitably he will no doubt eat all of whatever candy i bring along.

here is little ‘dingdong’ patiently perched on the corner of a dumpster while i was taking pics of the ephemeral graffiti that has been painted upon it…

here is a closer look…

image

i particularly dig the tuft of cool, new wave orange hair he rocks on top of his head. he actually seems quite proud of it…

next, we have the world’s most evil dumpster.

yup, a demonic dumpster.

note the awfully creepy mouth of human teeth…

image

ah, demonic dumpster. what can i say that hasnt been said…

now, on to the tiny, beautiful ‘pipi’, who i found clinging to a reed next to some signage on the woonasquatucket river. i will show you the shot as i took it as well as a close up for clarity…

image

see her?

image

she was very sweet and kinda looked like a little geisha swaying in the breezes…

now, here are a couple of what i call ‘moss men’. to me, they are like a circus act, or the contortionists of some alternate species. i often wonder if they arent mistaken for ‘sasquatch’ because up close they certainly look like it.

also, they speak perfect english and like knock knock jokes. every time i pass them by, they now try to impress me with their amazing camoflage and adaptive uniqueness…

also note – their long toes, always visible…

i call this one ‘bill’.

and who knows why….

he is a bit cranky, a bit edgy, but funny as hell with a great smile and bright green eyes…

image

i mean, really, look at that grin…

image

here is his partner, ‘paul’…

again, as for the name…who knows.

can you spot him?

look for the exposed face and toes that, to me, are a dead giveaway…

image

here is why i NEVER try to approach or, god forbid, take any extraneous clothing hanging out of place on city fences…

kind of like the shoes hung over the power wires, or the one glove you see in the ground…

i say…stay away because…

image

where you find lost clothing…you find a little man who is probably using it as bait.

see him??

image

ah, the city…

i love that little guy’s mean expression.

hey, he’s a tough guy.

welcome to rhode island…

next up, one of westminster avenue’s alley demons…

image

i think he kind of looks like a traditional ‘grey alien’, but he is all devious, scheming demon.

here is a close up…

image

he actually is quite a conversationalist.

which serves his needs because if you look at the bottom of the shot, you can see exactly why he wanted to keep me talking…

image

i spotted this obvious trickery and moved on, but i could tell he kinda liked me…i think….gulp.

now…meet ‘tron’, as i call him for obvious reasons…

image

see, these beings are incredible mimics. i see it as an adaptational strength. he is actually pretending to be a lightpost and i think he is doing a pretty badass job…

here is a close up…

image

cool, huh?

finally, for now, here is what i feel is a ghost.

this is a sad image to me. he seems so lonely and yet when i approached he refused to acknowledge me.

he had a very brooding presence and i hope i didnt disturb him…

image

one last image…

this is a trinity of huge orbs.

i love how much personality they have and, yes, i saw them in real time and photographed what i was perceiving…

the camera only does them a fraction of the justice they deserve but this is what i got…

image

so, yeah.

next time you are out and about…take a closer look.

because they are certainly watching you….

xo.

  1. Keep posting. Can’t tell if you’ve lost your mind, or if you’ve found more minds. Either is wonderful & I enjoy trying to decipher, impossibly. Why such certainty in these ‘spirits’ being ‘other’? Or, in other words, why do you assume other personalities are at work?

  2. i assume nothing, good sir.

as far as losing my mind….

    merely, POSSIBLY misplaced.

    but…

reality has a pretty reliable lostandfound so…

    yeah.

    anyway…
